After the fascinating sonic pastiche that Bonesetters presented on Savages, the Muncie-to-Indy quartet’s 2011 debut full-length, the big question was how they would attempt to effectively follow up that diverse and expansive work. As it happens, the answer is by honing in on a single direction and keeping it to an EP, as exemplified on the band’s seven-song Figure It Out, released earlier this year. Bonesetters’ carnival ride/Surf Rock soundtrack on Savages was enjoyable to be sure, but Figure It Out finds the band concentrating more on their Jim James vibe and maturing in that role to a compelling result. It’s a pretty safe bet that Bonesetters’ older songs are ripening to an amazing vintage in this new atmosphere as well.
