Sun Kil Moon (San Francisco)
Massillon, Ohio, native Mark Kozelek seems to deal in extremes and superlatives. He almost never gives interviews, preferring to let his work speak for itself. And does it ever. He is one of music’s most prolific artists, releasing more than 40 titles in the past 25 years, in solo or side project configurations or with his two acclaimed bands, Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon. Kozelek’s lustrous baritone and languid writing style provide a mesmerizing and evocative soundtrack to his intensely personal songs, tools that are even more effective when he covers other artists’ material (he once did an album of AC/DC covers that were so drastically reimagined that an editor believed one of the songs was a Leonard Cohen original). In the 11 years since Kozelek launched Sun Kil Moon (a punny reference to Korean boxer Sung-Kil Moon), he has deeply explored his creative spectrum, which runs the gamut from Ambient quietude to electric Indie Rock clamor. Sun Kil Moon’s latest album, Benji, released earlier this year, follows the pattern established by just about everything Kozelek has produced; it is amazingly diverse and pointedly autobiographical and has been almost universally praised.
